A member of the state delegation received a new committee assignment from the Speaker of the House Friday.

Del. Susan Krebs, R-District 9, was moved from the Ways and Means Committee, which hears bills on tax measures and related issues, to the Health and Government Operations Committee, which examines bills related to health care, hospitals and government, among other issues.

“I liked the committee I was on, but it’s always good to broaden your horizons,” Krebs said.

The reassignment was part of a larger reshuffling involving nine delegates done by Speaker of the House Michael Busch, D-Anne Arundel.

“The speaker tries pretty hard to make sure committees are balanced with party, geography, gender and race,” said Alexandra Hughes, Busch’s spokeswoman.

Hughes said Krebs replaced Del. Richard Weldon Jr., who changed his party affiliation from Republican to Independent during the interim. Weldon represents Frederick and Washington counties.

“Del. Krebs is well respected and the speaker wanted to ensure there was still a senior Republican on the committee,” Hughes said.

Krebs’ spot on Ways and Means was filled by Del. Chris Shank, R-Washington and minority whip.

Hughes said the amount of reassignments was more to do with the “domino effect” created when one person is moved and an attempt is made to keep committees balanced.
