Dear Friends,
As the summer heats up, there are lots of events
to attend in Carroll. Here are three from my
schedule this week:
Business Roundtable
Yesterday, Del. Nancy Stocksdale, County
Commissioner Julia Gouge and I joined Carroll County
businesses as they voiced their economic struggles
to Comptroller Peter Franchot at a Carroll County
business roundtable. A wide range of
industries--insurance, banking, manufacturing,
healthcare, auditing, financial services and
education--attended the meeting held at the New
Windsor Conference Center. Faye Pappalardo,
president of Carroll Community College, told
Franchot that tough fiscal times have caused an
explosion of enrollment. Click

Sykesville Carnival
The
Sykesville Freedom Area Fire Department kicked
off its week-long carnival last night. After this
winter's fire destroyed part of its facilities,
the fire department hopes this event will bring in
much needed support to rebuild the fire hall.
The carnival grounds open at 6pm nightly,
and rides begin at 7 pm. Each night features live
music, rides and great food. I recommend the pit
turkey. Also, plan for the fireworks on Friday
night! I'll be working the french fry stand tonight,
and I hope to see you all there!
Annual
Financial Literacy Summit for Teachers
Today, I joined two hundred teachers from all
over Maryland for the Second Annual Financial
Literacy Summit, put on by the Maryland
Coalition for Financial Literacy and the
Maryland Council on Economic Education.
I believe that giving our children a personal
finance education is a top priority, and it was
wonderful to see so many teachers working towards
this goal. I am very proud that Carroll County
Public Schools is one of the first school systems in
the state to have financial literacy as a graduation
requirement.
At the event, I was recognized for my work on
the Financial Literacy Task Force. I also had the
opportunity to hear helpful talks on personal
finance topics, such as investor protection, housing
and credit card us
State Highway
Administration Replaces Bridge Deck on MD 26
over MD 97--Watch for Detour!
The Maryland
Department of Transportation's State Highway
Administration (SHA) has begun a $1 million
project to replace the bridge deck on MD 26 over
MD 97. SHA plans to complete the project this
fall.
During
construction, traffic on eastbound MD 26 will be
detoured to eastbound MD 850 (Old Liberty
Road) and then back to eastbound MD 26. Traffic on
westbound MD 26 will continue as usual during
construction.
As part of the
detour, left turns from Enterprise Street onto
eastbound MD 26 will be prohibited. Those coming
from Enterprise Street should travel north to
southbound Klee Mill Road back to MD 26.
Please be alert and slow down when driving
in work zones. If you have any questions about
traffic operations on MD 26, MD 97, MD 850 or
other state numbered routes in Carroll County,
call SHA's District 7 Office at (301) 624-8100 or
toll free at 1 (800) 635-5119. Click
