As part of "Legislative Back-to-School week, state delegates
Susan Krebs and Tanya Shewell
were on hand last Thursday for the annual countywide Carroll
County Student Government Association meeting, hosted this year
at Liberty High School.
In
addition to brief reports from each of the local high schools
and Oklahoma Road and East middle schools, the event included a
presentation by Krebs and
Shewell
The two
members of the delegation to Annapolis discussed upcoming
legislation affecting students - namely new driving laws.
Starting Oct. 1, drivers using a provisional license will not be
allowed to drive with passengers who are not family members.
Provisional drivers will also be prohibited from using cell
phones while driving.
"If it
saves one life in this room, it will have been worth it,"
Krebs said.
Students expressed some disappointment over the new legislation
during a brief question-and-answer session with
Krebs.
In
response, she encouraged them to become involved with local
government and to share their opinions.
"We
value your input," Krebs said.
"These decisions are not made in a vacuum."
Shewell
shared a personal story of being rear-ended by a driver using a
cell phone.
She
also said she'd like to hear feedback from students on other
issues - including possible legislation to prohibit smoking in
Maryland restaurants. Many students expressed support for that
idea.
