The Early Years
Born in Baltimore on
Dec. 4, 1959, Susan graduated from Woodlawn High School, then earned
her
B.S. in business administration and accounting from Towson
University in 1981. She did postgraduate studies at the University
of Baltimore. Susan has worked as an accountant and financial
consultant for small businesses for more than 20 years, most
recently as client manager for Aston IT Group.
Susan and her husband, Mark, also a Towson alumnus,
have
been actively involved in their
community since moving to Eldersburg over 20 years ago.
With their love of the outdoors
and sports, Susan and Mark spent time helping with Freedom Optimist
athletic programs for more than 15 years.
Susan’s love of Carroll County deepened as she committed
increasingly more time to community, church, sports, and to what
would become a consuming passion—schools.
Some might say Susan got her first taste of politics at age 24 when
she began lobbying for more swings on the neighborhood swing set.
She noticed that a nearby tot lot often had as many as two dozen
little ones at a time who wanted to swing. So she led an effort to
get a new swing set. She never got the swings, but she soon found
herself pushing for other improvements in Eldersburg and Sykesville.
Her volunteer activities with
Carroll County Public Schools, the PTA and the
Freedom Area Citizens Council opened her eyes to an impending
crisis. South Carroll was emerging from its bucolic past to become
the fastest growing and most populous area of the county. In the
process, schools, water supplies, roads and emergency services were
being overwhelmed. Susan responded by organizing residents to fight
for construction of Piney Ridge Elementary School, Oklahoma Road
Middle and Century High schools in South Carroll County.
